SECTION 13
EXTRA-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES
13.1 Organizations. The following organizations and activities are authorized within the Rossview Army JROTC program. These are categorized as extra-curricular activities, and participation is voluntary on the part of the individual cadet. The SAI/AI serves as the faculty supervisor for these activities but may designate another qualified adult to oversee such activities. One of the strengths of the JROTC program is that it allows many students to become involved in extra-curricular activities. This participation builds team work, and self-esteem thus supplying the objectives of the program.
· Army JROTC Drill Team (Service Weapon and Unarmed)
o Army JROTC Color Guards
· Army JROTC Raider Team (Physical Fitness Team, Orienteering Team)
13.2 Battalion Commander and Staff Team Participation.
· Cadets in battalion command and staff and leadership positions may participate as members of special teams; however their primary function is the administration of the battalion in their respective areas of expertise.
· If participating in an extra-curricular activity whether it be JROTC, school affiliated, or outside of school interferes with the execution of their command and staff duties in a detrimental or negative manner they must adjust/reduce the scope of their extra-curricular activities in order fulfill their command and staff obligations. Failure to do so will result in the relief from their assigned position and corresponding reduction in rank and privileges as stated in Section 6.5 of this document.
· No cadet may simultaneously hold a battalion command or staff position and be a Drill or Raider Team Commander.
13.3 Battalion Drill Team. The Battalion will organize and train a cadet Drill Team consisting of multiple teams (Platoon, Squad, Exhibition, and Color Guard) for the purpose of competing and providing school and community service support. Drill Commanders will coordinate activities and functions of their respective drill teams with the Cadet Battalion Commander and the Team Coach (AI).
13.3.1 Army JROTC Color Guard. The cadet battalion will organize and train Color Guards. The Battalion Sergeant Major and Drill Team CDR are overall responsible for training the Color Guard and to coordinate activities and functions in which the Color Guard may participate. Each Color Guard will hold sufficient practice sessions to ensure they are proficient to be able to meet or exceed the standards set forth in this SOP and applicable Army regulations.
13.3.1 Eligibility. The Drill Team is open to all cadets who are actively enrolled in the RHS JROTC Program and who have signed and current parental permission slips (annual basis for the current school year – SY 06-07) currently on file with Team Leader and Team Coach (AI).
13.3.2 Organization.
· The Drill Team will typically consist of a platoon (13), squad (9), color guard (4), exhibition squad (9), and exhibition team (2). Depending on the number of interested cadets, more sub-teams may be formed (I.E more than one color guard or squad). Or many cadets may be selected for more than one of the sub-teams (I.E. be a member of squad, color guard and platoon).
· RHS JROTC will always strive to field and compete with as many teams that have proven proficient to compete at the appropriate level. If more than one team is assembled in a specific area, the most proficient team will be the varsity team and the second team will be junior varsity team (JV). The Team Coach (AI) at his discretion will determine if teams are proficient to compete.
· The Drill Team Commander will be a cadet officer selected by the AI. At the AI’s discretion, the Drill Team may have co-commanders. Each sub-team will have a designated team commander selected by the Drill Team Commander with the approval of the AI. The Drill Team Commander (s) is/are responsible for planning and executing all aspects of the weekly training schedule for all drill practices and preparations for competitions which includes personnel, administrative, equipment and supply requirements. Drill Commander(s) will receive approval from the Team Coach/AI for the weekly training schedule at the minimum of a week prior to executing training.
· The Drill Team Commander will select training and administrative assistants as required to meet all personnel, administrative, equipment, and supply requirements/activities for each session. Such as permission slips for each Drill Meet, publish training schedules, perform instruction of selected training events, issue /maintain/turn-in weapons, daily roll call, water availability and any other duties the team requires.
13.3.3 Practice Attendance.
· Drill practice will be held four times a week, Monday through Thursday from 2:45 to 4:15 PM unless otherwise designated by the Team Coach (AI).
· Drill Team members will be standing next to a desk at the position of attention in the AI’s classroom or other designated practice area no later than (NLT) 2:45. All members will wear appropriate shoes for marching. Cadets will not be allowed to march bare footed, with flip flops or any other foot gear that will hinder the proper execution of drill movements. Drill Team members will not wear baggy or unsuitable attire (chains and straps) that will hinder the cadet in the proper execution of drill movements. Drill members are authorized to supplement their training uniform with additional clothing if environmental conditions warrant additional clothing i.e. sweatshirts, gloves, knit caps.
· If a student is participating in another officially sanctioned athletic activity offered by Rossview High School and would like to try out for the Drill Team the commander and coach (AI) will evaluate if the student can attended enough practices to stay proficient. If the commander and coach deem this is not possible the student will not be allowed on the team.
· If a Drill Team member is participating in another officially sanctioned non-athletic activity offered by Rossview High School such as Band or Drama; that individual will be evaluated to see if he or she can attended enough practices to stay proficient. If the commander and coach deem this is not possible the student will not be allowed on the team.
· Drill members who are not participating in an officially sanctioned RHS athletic activity will attend all practices.
· Excused absences will be granted by the Team Coach (AI) on a case by case basis. Medical/dental appointments, after school academic meetings/groups, and extenuating family circumstances are examples of absences, which can be excused as long as they are identified to the Team Coach prior to the actual practice. Absences due to work, non-school related activities, and personal convenience are examples of unexcused absences. Two unexcused absences will result in dismissal from the team.
13.3.4 Drill Team Preparations and Selections for Competitions/Meets.
“Gentlemen: you have now reached the last point. If anyone of you doesn’t mean business let him say so now. An hour from now will be too late to back out. Once in, you’ve got to see it through. You’ve got to perform without flinching what ever duty is assigned you regardless of the difficulty or the danger attending it. If it is garrison duty, you must attend to it. If it is meeting fever, you must be willing. If it is the closest kind of fighting, anxious for it. You must know how to ride, how to shoot, how to live in the open. Absolute obedience to every command is your first lesson. No matter what comes you mustn’t squeal. Think it over-all of you. If any man wishes to withdraw he will be gladly excused, for others are ready to take his place.

13.4.3 Raider Team Preparations and Selections for Competitions/Meets.
· Selection for the Varsity/Rossview #1 Team and Junior Varsity/Rossview #2 will be based on the following criteria:
· The primary method for determining selection to teams will be based on Order of Merit List (OML) for the highest to lowest scores on the standard Army Physical Fitness Test (APFT) for the 17-21 Age Group as per Field Manual 21-20 Physical Fitness Training.
-
All Varsity/Rossview #1 Team members should score 270 and above on the APFT out of a possible 300 points.
-
In order to achieve 90 points in each of the three categories scored on the APFT (Push-ups/Sit-ups/2 Mile Run) Varsity Raiders should strive to meet the following minimums:
-
Male – 64 Push-ups = 90 points
-
Female – 36 Push-ups = 90 points
-
Male/Female – 72 Sit-ups = 90 points
-
Male – 13:42 2 Mile Run = 90 points
-
Female – 16:24 2 Mile Run = 90 points
-
Divide 2 Mile Run times by 2 in order to obtain 1 Mile equivalents (Male = 6:51 & Female = 8:12)
-
Additional criteria that will used for selection will be the availability and need for specific special skills such as Near Side and Far Side for the 1 Rope Bridge, orienteering and map reading skills, knot tying proficiency, obstacle course skills, tug of war strength, 3 mile runs, and other skills as required for each different Raider competition/meet.
-
Selection of Rossview #1 and #2 Teams will be made by Raider Team Commander(s) for each Raider Competition/Meet pending final approval by the Team Coach (SAI). Selections will be based on the specific events that will be unique to the forthcoming Raider competition. 13.4.4 All Raiders in good standing are authorized to wear their red Rossview JROTC T-shirt with ACU pants to include black belt, and clean tan suede boots during school on the day prior to a competition.
