SECTION-7
ACADEMIC AND PERFORMANCE CREDIT AND GRADING
7.1       JROTC is an Elective Course.  Each level consists of two semesters of training in JROTC courses.  For example, successful completion of two semesters as a LET 1 qualifies the student for advancement to the LET 2 level.  Successful completion of two semesters as a LET 2 qualifies the student to advance to the LET 3 level.  Credit towards graduation will normally be awarded as follows:

            COURSE                                                                                CREDIT

Leadership, Education, and Training 1 (LET 1)                                       1

Leadership, Education, and Training 2 (LET 2)                                       1

Leadership, Education, and Training 3 (LET 3)                                       1

Leadership, Education, and Training 4 (LET 4)                                       1

7.2       Grading.  In general, the grading criteria for a cadet is as listed below.  Instructors may modify the points at their discretion.  (The modifications must be presented to students in writing at the beginning of the grading period.)

7.2.1   The JROTC grading system is based on the cadet receiving a maximum of up to 200 points in a weekly grading period.  The points are awarded based on performance of duty and participation during the conduct of the weekly events of physical training, uniform inspection, and  classroom academics and assignments.  Total number of points for a week may vary due to factors such as a shortened week or a particular event was not conducted that week (e.g. PT, Quiz…).  This system is administered using following points system.

o       LEADERSHIP = 50 Points per week / 10 points per day.  In order to earn their leadership points, cadets are expected to set a good example for others to follow.  The Leadership Points criteria are provided:

o       First and foremost, the cadet will uphold, maintain, and display all values and standards as set forth in the Cadet Creed and this Standard Operating Procedure.

o        Maintaining the personal appearance and grooming standards as set forth Section 9 of this SOP.

o       Being in the right place, at the right time, in the right uniform with a positive attitude.

o       Maintaining civility and composure in all situations by being courteous and respectful at all times.

o       Attempts to complete all assigned tasks.

o       When placed in charge, the cadet takes charge to the best of his/her ability.

o       When not in charge, receives and complies with guidance of instructors and cadets placed in charge.

o       Places the needs of those entrusted to his or her care before his or her own.

o       PARTICIPATION = 50 Points per week / 10 points per day.  In order to earn their participation points, cadets are expected to participate in all assigned/directed events for the class period.  The following participation points criteria are provided:

o        Attempts to or completes all assigned work in class.  Actively participates in all class/group work, briefings, and discussions.

o       Actively participates in all physical activities to the best of his or her abilities.

o       Does not do work from other classes during JROTC class time unless directed to do so by the instructor or Cadet in Charge.

o       Does not disrupt the class or other cadets therefore preventing the class or individual cadets from participating in the assigned activity.

o       PHYSICAL TRAINING (PT) = 20 Points / 10 points per PT session (2 x PT sessions per week).  PT is scheduled on the first and last day of the week, typically Monday and Friday, unless otherwise directed by the Instructors.  In order to earn the full 20 PT points, cadets must be present for PT, in the right uniform, and actively participate.  Cadets can make-up points caused by absences by scheduling a make-up PT session with the instructors.

o       Being present for PT, but not participating without a valid reason will result in the loss of the cadet’s 10 points for the PT session.

o       Being present for PT, but not in the correct uniform (See Section 11.3.3 of this SOP) can result in a partial loss of points.

o       Repeated occurrences of uniform violations and flagrant disregard for wearing the proper uniform will result in escalating the loss of PT points as well as leadership and participation points.

o       Repeated occurrences of being present on PT days and not “dressing out” and participating will result in the loss of PT Points as well as the 10 daily points for Participation and 10 daily points for Leadership and eventually result in failure of JROTC and removal from the course.

o       UNIFORM INSPECTION = 40 points.  Uniform Inspection Day is every Thursday unless otherwise directed by the Instructors.  Tuesday of the following week is the designated Uniform Inspection Make-up Day.  Cadets can make-up points caused by absences by wearing their uniform on the designated make-up day.  In order to earn the full 40 points, cadets must meet the following criteria:

o       Wear the uniform for the whole school day.

o       Be present for the inspection.

o       Meet all grooming and uniform wear standards as prescribed in Section 11 of this SOP.

o       Successfully answer all inspection questions.

o       Being present for class on Uniform Inspections day, but not participating without a valid reason will result in the loss of the cadet’s 40 points for the Uniform Inspection and the loss of the10 daily points for Participation and 10 daily points for Leadership.

o       Repeated occurrences of not wearing the uniform on Uniform Inspection days will result in escalating the loss of Uniform Inspection, Leadership, and Participation  points and will eventually result in failure of JROTC/removal from course.

o       ACADEMIC QUIZZES, ALTERNATE ASSIGNMENT, OR STAFF DEVELOPMENT = 40 Points.  In order to earn Academic points, cadets must satisfactorily complete the quiz, briefing/presentation/class, writing assignment, staff work or assigned project which will be graded on a 40 point scale for the week.  Some academic assignments may be weighted more or less depending on the time allocated to the material.

7.2.2  All incomplete assignments or missed work will be given a grade of 0/zero until the work is completed.  This ensures there is no confusion on progress reports or PowerSchool  about which assignments have or have not been completed by the cadet and their parent(s)/guardian(s).

7.2.3  Leadership Points are not awarded for unexcused absences.  Excused or unexcused absences must be made up for Uniform and Physical Training Days.  Leadership points are lost for all days absent unless it is a school excused absence (pre-approved school activity) or medically excused absence (requires note from doctor/dentist/medical facility).

7.2.4  Suspension (In or Out of School) will result in the automatic loss of Leadership points because the cadet failed to set a good example for other cadets.  Participation points will be given upon successful completion of all assigned work given during the suspension period.

7.2.5  It is the cadet’s responsibility to coordinate with their respective instructor for all missed assignments while absent.  Failure to do so will result in the cadet maintaining zero points for all missed work.  Extenuating circumstances resulting in high absences will be taken into consideration for each cadet on a case by case basis by the instructors.

7.2.6  JROTC Grading Formula for 9 week grading period.

Leadership (L) +  Participation (P) + Physical Training (PT) + Uniform Inspection (UI) =           Weekly/9 Week Grade

Total Achieved Points (TAP) divided by Total Possible Points (TPP) = Weekly/9 Week Grade

Example

The following cadet achieved 40 of 50 Leadership Points, 50 of 50 Participation Points, 20 of 20 PT Points, 38 of 40 Uniform Inspection Points, and 32 of 40 Academic Assignment Points.

TAP is 40  +  50  +  20   +  38   +  32   =  180 TAP

                                    TPP is 50  +   50  +  20   +   40  +  40  =   200  TPP

                                                180 TAP divided by 200 TPP = 90.0 / B

7.2.5   RHS Semester Grading Formula

1st 9 wks grade (40%)  +  2nd 9 wks grade (40%)  +  Semester Exam (20%)  =   Semester Grade

7.3             Extra Credit.  Cadets may arrange with the SAI and/or the AI for extra credit assignments; extra credit raises a Cadet’s grade no higher than one letter grade for a 9 week grading period.

Extra Credit Points:  Cadets can receive points per each weekly grading period for JROTC extracurricular activities.  For example, 10 points for participating in Drill/Color guard or Raider event/meet or a pre-determined number of points set forth by the instructors for achieving a fundraising goal or participating in a community service event.
